Boogie expects to start upon his return to the Warriors, but will he close out games?
Garrett Ellwood / Getty Images

Garrett Ellwood / Getty Images

DeMarcus Cousins is expected to return to the hardwood this week for the first time since tearing his achilles last January, this time as a member of the Golden State Warriors. He’s likely to start against the Clippers this Friday, but while it’s good news to most, it doesn’t solve all their problems.

Given the Warriors recent history of centers (Biedrins, Bogut, Pachulia), the promise of Boogie joining Golden State is definitely enticing. He brings a presence inside that the Splash Brothers haven’t been privy to, and that’s a scary thought. It’s not the only role that Steve Kerr has planned for Cousins though, given his newfound propensity to shoot from deep.

In his last two seasons, Cousins has averaged over five three-point attempts a game at a 36 percent clip. That spacing is an aspect of his game that the Warriors will feel immediately with Draymond Green’s defenders having abandoned him from deep. If an opposing center guards Draymond instead of Cousins, Green’s screening then become far more valuable, and similarly, Cousins will have a mismatch too.

Recently, Kerr told 95.7 The Game “We're not gonna slow down just for DeMarcus. So you can probably envision a fast break with us and DeMarcus trailing the play ... the ball comes back out, he's a guy who can spot up and knock down that 3-point shot." That game plan is far different from the one he had in mind when they first signed him. Bob Myers recounts Kerr saying, “I want [DeMarcus] on the block, we haven’t had that threat, we can give him the ball, we can play off of him.”

Kerr’s change in mindset is indicative of the mismanagement that he’s guilty of, but his change of heart in regards to Cousins coincides with how the team has played as of late. Kerr mentioned that Boogie will start upon his return. “After that, everything's on the table. We have to figure out what the rotations will look like, how many minutes he can play. We'll have to play around with the minutes, the combinations, the sets.”

Immediately inserting Cousins into the starting lineup may seem obvious, but it’s important to note that Kerr didn’t say he would finish games. Part of that is due to the quality production from Kevon Looney. Looney has been on the court at the end of most every game this season, despite Damian Jones starting until his season ending injury on December 1st. He’s the Dubs’ most solid role player, and like a metronome, he can keep his tempo steady no matter the rhythm of the game.

While Cousins is an upgrade over Looney, there is concern of how his ability to switch on defense will affect how the Dubs scheme their coverages. It’s possible Looney could continue closing games while Cousins returns from injury and gets use to the Warriors’ pace of play after almost a year off. There’s a chance he will also prioritize his energy on offense rather than defense; Boogie will return to the free agent market this summer and his numbers will mean something in that regard.

Perhaps they’ll just go small to close out games with Draymond at center. He’s by far their best defensive big, but going small means having Iguodala on the court as well, who like Green has struggled offensively. At least with Looney on the court, there’s a fourth scoring option, without sacrificing too much on defense. Perhaps Kerr will let the game become a shootout, and trust that the five All-Stars will work cohesively on the court.

The good thing is they’ll have three months to figure things out before the playoffs. Boogie’s return will be a breath of fresh air for the entire organization; like the gift that you know your parents got you, but you couldn’t open until Christmas.

Well, Christmas just came a little late in the Bay.

Ball Don't Lie Ep 17 - Bring David Stern Back ft. @Mariannoo
What 2 Watch: Tuesday, May 8th

My condolences to the country of Canada. LeBron James destroyed your hopes and dreams last night just as he always does. You can't run from destiny, unless your name is Wong.

While the "BeSt RaPt0rS tEaM eVeR" getting bounced in the second round is bad for Toronto, it's good for you. You don't have to worry about wasting two hours of your night watching those frauds again until October! Best free up your night for more interesting games.

Utah Jazz v. Houston Rockets - Western Conference semifinal, Game 5
8:00pm EST, TNT, TNTdrama.com or TNT app

That State Farm agent is 48 minutes away from his first conference finals! Good for Cliff. One can only be so mediocre for so long. The Jazz try and overcome the Rockets' homecourt advantage to force Game 6, but is it really an advantage when your arena are as rowdy as a Joel Osteen service?

New Orleans Pelicans v. Golden State Warriors - Western Conference semifinal, Game 5
10:30pm EST, TNT, TNTdrama.com or TNT app

Like Mariano says, this is blu-ray footage for the Warriors. Can't wait for Steph to talk about how the Pels really made them buckle down to win this hard-fought five-game series.

Boston Red Sox v. New York Yankees
7:00pm EST, MLB Network, MLB.TV, MLB At Bat app

The rivalry is fucking back baby! The Sox and Yankees have the two best records in baseball, with the Bronx Bombers one game back of the Sox in first. The Yankees have won 15 or their last 16 games, while Boston is on its best start since 2002. Benches cleared the last series between the two. Don't you fucking love baseball when these two are good? Damn.

Swansea City v. Southampton
2:30pm EST, NBCSN, NBC Sports App

The 17th and 18th teams in the Premier League table battle to avoid relegation. The teams may suck, but the threat of the loser dropping out of the EPL next season makes this an intriguing midday matchup across the pond.

The Third Pick Ep.5: Get Lauri More Shots

Hoops N Brews #72: LeBron to the Warriors confirmed(All Star 2018 reaction)

In a condensed 30 minute edition of @HoopsNBrews Pavy & TPJ to talk all things All Star weekend 2018

How is Draymond Green doing?

For a third straight year, Draymond Green has been selected to the All-Star Game to much, including my, chagrin. Not to say that he doesn’t deserve it, or that I think he hasn’t played like an All-Star, he has. My concern is the lack of downtime All-Star weekend can provide to any player that gets to play in it. Just watch first trip to the ASG in Toronto in 2016.

One of my biggest questions for Green is how healthy he really is? It’s seemed like he’s been wearing his undershirt for more than half the season. Here and there he looks physically disgruntled, and I justwonder why he doesn’t take some games off to make sure everything’s good. He’s also been wearing an electric stimulator on his back whenever he’s on the bench, and having used one myself in physical therapy, it’s a clear sign that his back isn’t in the best shape either.

It’s clear that Green is taking it upon himself to be ready to play. While the Dubs have shown that they’re happy to rest players for games at a time, Green could probably use some. In an interview with The Athletic, Green said, “What we start? 4-3. I knew all three of those losses were 100 percent my fault. I just wasn’t locked into the game. It’s just like if KD comes out and he can’t score, or if Steph comes out and he can’t score. It hurts because that’s their job. It’s my job to bring that emotion, to bring that fire and I wasn’t.”

It’s an interesting response Draymond though. Green is the quarterback of their defense, and a coach on the floor. If you ever catch a game where Draymond isn’t playing, you’ll be in for a sloppy game on both ends. Even if Green doesn’t have the best outing, he’s going to snap the other guys into shape.

In their Dec. 23 loss to the Nuggets, Draymond berated Klay all the way to the bench after a questionable shot in the 3rd quarter.  When asked about Draymond's reaction, Klay said “I don’t mind him getting on me… I hope he does it next time as well.” This is a clear sign of the respect Green gets from his teammates, and it’s built on being right most of the time. Without Green on the floor, there isn’t another player or coach holding the team accountable in moments like that.

As a Draymond stan, something I’ve yearned for this season are Green’s monumental defensive plays, whether it’s diving for a loose ball to start the break or making a game changing block. Instead, Durant has been the one with defensive highlights, and subsequently getting Defensive Player of the Year buzz. Give KD credit for stepping up his aggression, but it’s also due to Draymond's lack of physical aggression.

But Draymond could just be changing as a person. He’s been avoiding technical fouls, and keeping his emotions in check. His choice in music has started to shift as well, listening to slow jams and 80s funk pre-game, and even using it to focus throughout the game.

Every new season though, players try to come in with a new aspect in their game. For Green, it’s been maturation, and trying to find the balance between aggression and poise. For a 2nd round pick who’s had to ride the chip on his shoulder to get to where he’s gotten, it’s a big step to change those ways. Green is an established player in this league, a 3-time All-Star, and a DPOY. He doesn’t have to put in the same work he did to get here. But Draymond lives by his own standards, and those standards are the most high.

What's the matter with Andre Iguodala?
Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images North America

Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images North America

It might just stem from that historic play from game seven of the 2016 Finals and the shockwaves that LeBron's block sent around the world, but Andre Iguodala hasn't seemed to have shaken it off. Since that play the number of layups that Andre passes up is cringe worthy, and may become detrimental come playoff time.

Don’t get it wrong, Andre still is an elite passer. He has eyes in the back of his head, as he showed in the game against the Clippers, getting Zaza Pachulia on a fast break dunk (that he made!). He shows the same high IQ on defense too, using his memory bank to remember how to defend a variety of different players, having been tasked to guard Curry, KD, and LeBron throughout his playoff career.

Part of what has taken Andre out of an offensive rhythm has been his role on the team. The past three seasons, all of which he’s come off the bench, have been his lowest scoring years yet. In fact, this year he’s hit career low numbers in points per game (5.6), field goal percentage (42.7%) and three point shooting (23.1%).

It’s hard to tell which of those stats is responsible for the others though. Does the number of points Iguodala is expected to score affect his ability to catch a shooting flow, or does his lack of shooting flow keep him from scoring efficiently? That’s something we’ll probably never know as ambiguous as Iguodala can be, just look at some of his thoughts on his slump from Wednesday's practice before facing the Clippers.

It may just be that his free throw numbers are at a below average 63.1%, and defenders are often looking to foul him at the rim. An Iguodala dunk often feels as special as a Curry 25-footer, and the fans have expected that aggressiveness since he signed with the team in 2014. Ironically, Andre often gets so open on dunks because defenders expect him to pass the rock. Patrick McCaw, on the other hand, has come out the last few games with explosive and aggressive takes to the rim that he’s started not to overthink.

Where all of these offensive woes could end up hurting the team is come playoff time. While the pace rarely slows down when the Dubs play, opponents will play harder on defense, and smarter as they come more accustomed to playing the Warriors. One of the ways teams could end up guarding Golden State is to double off of shooters, and when Iguodala and Draymond are on the floor together, teams will have two players to help off of from the perimeter. What the Warriors' hope (and belief) is, is that Andre will lock in towards the end of the year. It seems to be a yearly tradition at this point, as he’ll put up 15 and 8 in a few of the last games of the season.

Though even I would say Iguodala regressing to unplayable in big minutes is unlikely, his contract could come into play when the team determines their future. After days of negotiation, and a free agent meeting with the Kings, Andre was able to secure the bag with a 3 year, $48 million deal. With prospects like McCaw and Bell coming up the pike with short deals (being second round picks) the Warriors may want to explore their options with Iguodala’s contract.

While I doubt that Andre will be moved come the trade deadline, things may get interesting in the summer. But come April and June, it should become a lot more clear whether Andre can still contribute when it counts the most for this team, and it may just determine his fate.
